Helios Towers and Camara Education Tanzania have formed a meaningful and multi-year collaboration that elevates digital education across Tanzania. From urban classrooms to remote schools, they’ve been systematically establishing Digital Learning Centres, training educators and students, and enhancing education infrastructure—most recently including environmental engagement at Igogwe.

Helios Towers is fortunate to have numerous friends and partners in the charity space such as Camara Education Ltd. who help set up ICT labs across schools and in partnership with our local team recently refurbed and equipped a lab in Zanzibar, also providing training for staff.

Schools Location

The Helios-supported schools are all public secondary schools located in diverse but underserved settings across Tanzania. They include large urban schools like Kurasini in Dar es Salaam with overcrowded classrooms and heavy enrolment, and remote rural schools such as Endevesi in Arusha, serving pastoralist Maasai communities with previously no ICT access. The programme also covers island schools like Mkwajuni in Zanzibar, where geographical isolation has limited exposure to digital learning, as well as rapidly growing schools such as Chinangali in Dodoma and Igogwe in Mwanza, both with enrolments above 1,200 students. Across all sites, schools face challenges of overcrowding, resource scarcity and uneven teacher deployment, making the installation of Digital Learning Centres a critical step in bridging the digital divide for students from in-need communities.

The Impact

This partnership has significantly expanded access to digital learning in underserved public secondary schools by equipping ICT labs, providing training for teachers, students, and school leaders, and fostering ICT clubs that sustain usage beyond the classroom.

Since 2021, the project has reached urban, island, and rural schools—transforming teaching and learning for thousands of students, introducing the Information and Computer Studies (ICS) subject where it was previously unavailable, and enabling schools to integrate technology into everyday education.

 

Our commitment includes providing ongoing school support over a four-year period, focusing on the successful integration of ICT into teaching and learning during the next phase of the project. Thus, we actively track how each school is utilising the DLC alongside providing ongoing training, maintenance and technical support.

Project Launch
& Media Coverage

Each project followed a consistent, practical rollout: contractors completed classroom renovation (painting, windows, sockets, ventilation), electrical works and protective measures (AVS/auto voltage protection), then Camara installed the LAN, classroom server and client PCs, loaded offline EdPortal content and tested the network; this was immediately followed by multi-day teacher, leader and student trainings and formal handover ceremonies attended by Helios representatives, school leadership and local officials.

Launch days combined technical commissioning with public handover speeches and media capture so the school and district could publicly commit to sustaining use and invite partner follow-up.
