About MsingiTek Programme

MsingiTek is an innovative tablet-based foundational learning programme designed to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills for children in Grades 1–3 in Tanzania. The programme uses interactive, child-centred digital learning to help young learners build strong foundations in reading, writing, and arithmetic through self-paced and adaptive learning experiences.
The programme is implemented by Imagine Worldwide Tanzania in collaboration with local implementation partners, including Camara Education Tanzania, under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), TAMISEMI, and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training Zanzibar (MoEVT).

The Challenge

Tanzania has made significant progress in expanding access to education, but foundational learning outcomes remain a major challenge. While school enrolment has increased over the years, many children still struggle to achieve expected literacy and numeracy competencies in the early grades.

According to the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) Standard Two National Assessment conducted in 2024, only 62.56% of learners achieved average-to-very-good performance in arithmetic, while 69.63% achieved similar levels in writing and 78.92% in reading. These results highlight the urgent need for effective and scalable solutions to strengthen early-grade learning, particularly in underserved and rural communities

Limited access to learning resources, overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and infrastructure challenges continue to affect the quality of foundational learning across many primary schools in Tanzania

The Solution

MsingiTek addresses these challenges by combining technology, teacher support, and community engagement to improve foundational literacy and numeracy outcomes in primary schools.

The programme uses durable, offline, and solar-powered tablets loaded with interactive learning content through the onebillion application. Learners participate in structured self-learning sessions designed to strengthen reading, writing, and arithmetic skills through engaging and adaptive exercises.

Each learner receives approximately 90 minutes of guided tablet-based learning per week, allowing children to progress at their own pace while reinforcing classroom instruction in a fun and supportive environment. The implementation model includes:

Camara Education Tanzania’s Role

As an implementation partner, Camara Education Tanzania supports the delivery and sustainability of the programme through school readiness assessments, infrastructure preparation, technical deployment, teacher training, monitoring and evaluation, and ongoing school support.

Camara works closely with district authorities, school leaders, teachers, technicians, and communities to ensure schools are equipped and supported to successfully integrate digital learning into foundational education. In several schools, the programme infrastructure also supports broader community learning opportunities beyond classroom hours, contributing to the wider vision of community-based and lifelong learning.

Programme Impact

MsingiTek is helping transform classrooms into more engaging and learner-centred environments where children actively participate in their learning journey. Teachers have reported:
● Increased learner engagement and participation
● Improved learner confidence, especially in arithmetic
● Better classroom attendance and motivation
● Greater independence in learning among pupils
The programme has also strengthened teachers’ confidence in integrating technology into learning and has increased community awareness of the importance of foundational literacy and numeracy. Through continued collaboration with government and education partners, MsingiTek demonstrates how well-designed digital learning solutions can strengthen foundational learning outcomes and expand access to quality education for children in Tanzania.
